The history of Kitchener began in 1784, when the British granted the territory it occupies today to the Six Nations. It was a gift for their support at the time of the American Revolution. In the period between 1796 and 1798 38 000 hectares of these lands were sold to Col. Richard Beasley, who was a Loyalist. The area acquired by Beasley was remote but it was the matter of high interest from the side of German Mennonite dynasties from Pennsylvania, whose main occupation was agriculture. They wanted to inhabit the land to get rid of constant persecution for their beliefs. Finally the Mennonites realised their plans purchasing the Beasley’s land and arranging there 160 farms.
By the beginning of the 19th century the first buildings were raised and during the next ten years a few families moved to the north, settling at the Sand Hills (the former name of Kitchener). One of that families was Schneiders’ family, and their house raised in 1816 is now the Kitchener’s downtown museum. In 1816 the settlement was designated as the Township of Waterloo by the Government of Upper Canada. Lots of areas consisted of moraines, bogs crossed by numerous rivers and streams was turned into farmland crossed by newly-built roads. Since that time and up to 1870 the town population considerably grew due to stable immigration flow mostly from Germany (Mennonites mostly). In 1833 the territory got the new name – Berlin. In 1853 the area became the official seat of the County of Waterloo and got the status of village.
The real development boom took place here after the Grand Trunk Railway lying from Sarnia to Toronto was extended, leading its way through Berlin. Since 1856 the area experienced rapid industrialization. June 9 of 1912 is the official date when Berlin became a city. Due to the growing anti-German sentiments in society during the First World War and local conflicts Berlin was forced to oppose its cultural distinctiveness. Finally in 1916, after long and controversial debates the city was renamed to Kitchener. The new name was chosen in honour of Herbert Kitchener, the first Herbert Kitchener who served as the Secretary of State for War of the UK and died that year carrying out his duties.
